About Course
This 4-session course introduces teens to the essentials of drawing through fun, hands-on practice. Students will learn how to see like an artist, build objects with shapes and perspective, sketch people and nature, and create a final project that brings it all together. With a balance of technical skills and creative expression, the course helps teens gain confidence in observation, shading, and composition while developing their own artistic voice.

Course Structure
Seeing Like an Artist
Introduction & Observation Skills
Goals: Train observation, loosen up, overcome fear of the blank page.
-
Warm-up (15 min): Gesture drawing with timed poses (objects, classmates posing for 1–2 min).
-
Core Skill (30 min): Blind contour & continuous line drawings (learning to see instead of symbol-drawing).
-
Hands-On (30 min): Drawing simple still-life objects (cups, bottles, fruit) using contour and basic proportions.
-
Mini-Project (30 min): Create a “page of studies” mixing blind contours, fast sketches, and one longer contour piece.
-
Takeaway: Observation > imagination. Homework: Draw 3 household objects in different perspectives.

Building with Shapes & Space
Form, Perspective, Light
Goals: Understand volume, space, and shading.
-
Warm-up (15 min): Quick sketching geometric forms (cubes, spheres, cylinders).
-
Core Skill (40 min): Intro to perspective – horizon line, vanishing points, how to place simple objects in space.
-
Hands-On (40 min): Draw a small still-life (box, bottle, fruit) using basic perspective and shading (light/shadow).
-
Mini-Project (20 min): Transform geometric forms into simple everyday objects (a cube → chair, cylinder → mug).
-
Takeaway: Everything is shapes and light. Homework: Sketch your room corner in perspective.
People & Nature
Outing + Expressive Drawing
Goals: Apply fundamentals in a lively environment.
-
Quick Outing (if possible, 45–60 min):
- Go outside (school yard, park, café terrace).
- Do 5-min “snapshot sketches” of people, trees, bikes, etc.
- Encourage simplification & storytelling through drawing. -
Core Skill (30 min): Proportions of the human figure (basic mannequin/gesture drawing).
-
Studio Practice (30 min): Combine gesture + proportion by drawing each other in 2–3 min poses.
-
Takeaway: Drawing movement and life, not perfection. Homework: Sketch 2–3 people from observation during the week.

Bringing It Together
Personal Project & Showcase
Goals: Apply skills to a final piece.
-
Warm-up (15 min): Quick expressive drawing (free choice subject).
-
Core Skill (20 min): Composition basics (rule of thirds, framing, balancing elements).
-
Final Project (60 min): Teens choose one subject:
- Still life (objects arranged in class)
- Self-portrait (using a mirror/photo)
- Outdoor scene from memory/sketches
→ Apply contour, perspective, shading, composition. -
Wrap-Up (15–25 min): Mini “exhibition.” Everyone shares their final piece + favorite sketch from the course.
-
Takeaway: Confidence in observation, shapes, shading, people, and composition.
By the end, each teen leaves with:
-
A sketchbook full of gesture/contour/observation studies.
-
At least one finished drawing applying fundamentals.
-
Experience drawing indoors & outdoors.
-
A toolkit of skills: observation, contour, perspective, shading, gesture, and composition.

The course teacher - Uri
I am a dedicated visual artist and art educator with more than two decades of experience teaching children, teens, and adults in diverse educational and cultural settings. My artistic practice spans drawing, painting, and mixed media, with a focus on helping students develop both technical skills and personal expression. I have taught in workshops, private classes, and art schools, in countries like Nicaragua, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cabo Verde. My classes aim to create inclusive and inspiring spaces where creativity, experimentation, and confidence can flourish.
I speak English, French, and Spanish fluently, and have a working understanding of Portuguese, which allows me to communicate in basic conversation. Teaching in multilingual and multicultural environments is one of my strengths, and I strongly believe that art is a universal language that brings people together and fosters growth.
